• The Uruguayan Popular Unity (Unidad Popular, UP) is a left-wing political party and coalition in Uruguay, established in 2013. It emerged as a response to what its founders saw as the moderate and reformist direction of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio), Uruguay’s main center-left coalition. Popular Unity brings together various socialist, communist, and anti-capitalist groups, including the Revolutionary Communist Party and the March 26 Movement, among others. The party positions itself as a more radical alternative to the Broad Front, advocating for deeper social, economic, and political transformations.
  
  Popular Unity’s values are rooted in anti-imperialism, socialism, and the defense of workers’ rights. The party calls for the nationalization of strategic sectors of the economy, such as banking, energy, and natural resources, aiming to place these under public control for the benefit of the majority. It opposes neoliberal economic policies and foreign intervention, emphasizing national sovereignty and self-determination. The party also supports the expansion of public education, healthcare, and housing, and it seeks to strengthen social welfare programs. Popular Unity is critical of free trade agreements and privatization, arguing that these policies undermine Uruguay’s independence and the well-being of its people. Overall, the party aspires to build a society based on social justice, equality, and solidarity, guided by Marxist and anti-capitalist principles.
